If you're applying for Canada PR through Express Entry or a Provincial Nominee Program, you need to prove your French proficiency. IRCC accepts two exams: TEF Canada and TCF Canada. Both are valid, but they're not identical — and choosing the wrong one can cost you time and money.
The Key Differences at a Glance
TEF Canada is administered by the CCIP (Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie de Paris) and TCF Canada is administered by France Éducation International. TEF Canada has more test centres in India and more available dates. TCF Canada is shorter overall but has fewer preparation resources available.
Which is Harder?
Neither is objectively harder — they test the same CEFR levels. However, most Indian students find TEF Canada more predictable because there are more past papers available and the task types are more consistent. TCF Canada's speaking section uses a different format that some students find more challenging.

If you have 3–4 months to prepare and want the most resources and test date flexibility, choose TEF Canada.
