How French Boosts Your Express Entry CRS Score: A Complete Points Breakdown

French proficiency can add up to 50 CRS points to your Express Entry profile. Here's exactly how the points are calculated and what CLB scores you need.

How French Boosts Your Express Entry CRS Score: A Complete Points Breakdown

In Canada's Express Entry system, French language proficiency is one of the most underutilised ways to boost your CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) score. While most applicants focus only on English, adding French can add up to 50 CRS points — potentially the difference between an ITA and waiting indefinitely.

The Two Ways French Adds CRS Points

First, French proficiency is scored as a second official language. If your first language is English, French scores at CLB 7+ in all four skills adds 24 points. CLB 9+ in all four skills adds 50 points. Second, if French is your first official language (FOLS), you get additional points for English as a second language.

The CLB 7 Threshold: Why It Matters

CLB 7 is the minimum threshold for French to count as a second official language in Express Entry. Below CLB 7, you get zero additional points. This is why our TEF Canada Intensive course is specifically designed to get students to CLB 7 as a minimum — it's the point where French starts paying off in CRS points.

TEF Canada Score to CLB Conversion

For TEF Canada, CLB 7 requires approximately: Listening 249–279, Reading 207–232, Writing 181–225, Speaking 181–225. CLB 9 requires: Listening 298–315, Reading 263–279, Writing 271–309, Speaking 271–309. Our mock tests are calibrated to these exact thresholds.

The math is simple: 24–50 extra CRS points from French can be the difference between getting an ITA in the next draw or waiting 12–18 months. For most of our students, the ₹28,000 course fee pays for itself many times over in immigration timeline savings.
