French language proficiency is one of the most powerful tools in a Canadian immigration application. Whether you are applying through Express Entry, a Provincial Nominee Program, or the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot, French skills can significantly boost your chances.
Which Exams Does IRCC Accept?
IRCC accepts TEF Canada and TCF Canada as proof of French language proficiency. Both exams test all four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
What CLB Level Do You Need?
For Express Entry French bonus points, you need CLB 7 or higher in all four skills. For Federal Skilled Worker eligibility, CLB 7 in all skills is also the minimum. Some PNPs require CLB 5 or CLB 6.
How Long Does Preparation Take?
Preparation time depends on your starting level. Complete beginners typically need 8–12 months to reach CLB 7. Intermediate learners (A2–B1) can reach CLB 7 in 3–6 months with intensive coaching.
